I gave you back your results on the Trial Final Exam, and your mark going into the Diploma Exam. We played some Kahoot games too. I'll see you tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. for our flex class review of Social 30-1 writing assignments. You should be going through the Diploma Exam Review page on the wiki, and reviewing all of the PowerPoints on the wiki from all of the units. If you haven't done so already, go through the Unit 1 and Unit 2 review Prezis.


Key Dates for IB 30/35 students:
  • Social 30-1 Diploma Exam Part "A" is on Tuesday, June 14th from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., if you take the extra 1/2 hour (you will write this on computer, your assigned computer lab is listed off outside the Business Office bulletin boards)
  • Social 30-1 Diploma Exam Part "B" is on Friday, June 17th in the Main Gym from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.


We finished off the movie "Contagion" today. I also finished off some housekeeping items: asking for booklets back, having you fill in your scantrons for Part B of the Social 10-1 Final Exam. Please remember that Part B of your Final Exam is on Thursday, June 16th in the Main Gym from 1-3 p.m..

Your will have 2 1/2 hours to write.

I tied up some loose ends today with the USA PATRIOT Act by giving some notes on the USA PATRIOT Act, the USA PATRIOT Re-authorization and Improvement Act (2005) and the USA FREEDOM Act (2015). We finished off "Citizen Four" today. I gave you a look at all of your marks on major tests this semester so we're clear on which test you'll be wiping out with the Trial Final. You're writing the Trial Final tomorrow, the study guide is at the back of your Social 30-1 workbooks.



We started our film study of "Contagion" today, we'll finish it off on Thursday. Please remember that you're writing your Final Exam Part A (WRA I) tomorrow in the Blue Lab in the Library, so please go there directly.

Please remember that you are writing the Social 30-1 Trial Final on Wednesday, June 8th. This exam will count for marks! The study guide is at the back of your Social 30-1 workbooks. If you want some practice multiple choice questions, you could try out the following link to Quest A+ (you can select a practice test or released items).

I showed you a video from the CBC News in Review series on "9/11: The Day that Changed the World" (this video was from five years after 9/11). Post-9/11, the United States passed the USA PATRIOT Act and began to engage in wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Out of these conflicts the US captured prisoners in their "war on terror". Some these "unlawful enemy combatants" were detained at Guantanamo Bay where they were interrogated using "enhanced interrogation techniques". I showed you a reaction video on the U.S. Senate Intelligence Committee's Report on Torture.




You got your Unit 3 WRA II Essays back, finally. I also handed back all of your homework checked work. I took in your Chapter 18-19 Key Terms and Questions for your last homework check in Social 10-1. I had you write a Unit 4 partner test for part of the remainder of class time, and then afterwards we played a few rounds of Kahoot review games. Tomorrow we'll start a film study of "Contagion".


We started a film study of "Citizen Four" the 2014 Academy Award Winner for documentary feature on Edward Snowden. We'll finish off this film study tomorrow. You're writing your Trial Final Exam on Wednesday, June 8th, this test wipes out your lowest major test mark. I'll probably have a print out of all of your tests that you've written this semester, and you'll have to determine which one you want to be wiped out.

We finished off the History's Turning Points video on the FLQ Crisis of 1970 today. You should have completely filled in all of the blanks in the film study sheet. This weekend, one of your tasks must be to go through  the Unit 3 PowerPoint presentations that are listed below, all of which are available on the IB 30/35 wiki. You should also go through the entire 9/11 and USA PATRIOT Act section of your Social 30-1 study booklet. You are writing your Trial Final Exam on Wednesday, June 8th, the study guide is at the back of your study booklets. Yes, it counts for marks.

We briefly went through the system of cheques and balances in the presidential democracy at the beginning of class. Then we went through key concepts in Unit 3 such as civil rights, entrenchment of rights, liberalism and illiberalism among others. If you missed class today, you need to get notes from a classmate on the War Measures Act. We started a film study on the History's Turning Points series on the FLQ Crisis (1970). We'll finish off this video tomorrow.


We dealt with issues surrounding privacy and the usage of CCTV cameras in the United Kingdom and Austria. I also showed you part of an HBO's Vice episode on "Surveillance City" which looked at 21st century policing tactics and CCTV usage in Camden, New Jersey. We'll do some essay preparation tomorrow in class.


You wrote your Chapter 15-16 Test today in class. I also shared with you the dates of the Final Exam Part A and B, tomorrow I'll give you the seating plan for Part B, which takes place in the Main Gym.

We discussed the presidential system and the American government structure. I also showed you a short video on the electoral college system.
