April 30


We finished off the George H.W. Bush administration, and I also got through the Clinton administration too. We should be able to get to the George W. Bush administration this week. This is our tie-in to Social 30-1 and concepts that you need to understand for the Social 30-1 Diploma Exam in June.


I showed you some exemplars for the TNC Dossier Assignment at the beginning of class. We got into a film study of "The Age of Wal-Mart" today, while you were watching the video you should have been looking for advantages and disadvantages of Wal-Mart. Please remember that you have the Chapter 10-11 Test on Thursday, May 3rd. Please see the study guide below.


Please make sure that you review Chapters 10 and 11. Please review your answers to questions/activities from your Unit 3 worksheet, as well as the key terms (from Chapter 10-11 and from the PowerPoint presentations). This test is on Thursday, May 3rd.

I did a homework check on the Chapter 7 Key Terms and Questions today. We looked at the case studies of Kosovo and Catalonia today. I gave you some notes on nationalism and the pursuit of national interest, and then I showed you a CBC News in Review from April 2008 on Kosovo declaring independence from Serbia. As you watched the video you were supposed to fill in answers to the video review questions. I also showed you a quick video from the Washington Post on Catalonia's attempts to declare independence from Spain.

We finished off “The Corporation” today. I gave you the TNC Dossier Assignment today, you picked the corporations that you’re going to do a profile on in your dossiers. We finished watching the segments of "Life + Debt" that we were going to watch today. We started "The Corporation" as well. We'll watch this documentary film over the course of the rest of this week. I'll be posting the Chapter 10-11 Test study guide tomorrow on the blog.


We finished off CNN documentary "Scream Bloody Murder" today, and then we moved right into the Rwandan genocide case study. We'll watch the film "Shake Hands with the Devil" for next couple of classes.


I went through a lecture on the Reagan administration today, and then in the time remaining we started an HBO documentary on Ronald Reagan. Hopefully, we'll be able to start the George H.W. Bush administration this week.

You wrote your Paper 3 on the U.S. Civil Rights Movement today. Hopefully, I'll be able to give you back your results next week. However, with the weather getting nicer this week, do I really want to be indoors marking your essays? Hmm.......


We watched a CNN documentary today called "Scream Bloody Murder", which we will continue tomorrow. As you watched this documentary you should have been taking notes on the key players in the genocides, and the witnesses to the killings.


I did a homework check on your WTO charts, and I handed back some previously checked homework too. I started showing a documentary called "Life + Debt" today. As you watched this film, you were supposed to take notes on the film study sheet provided. I paused the video numerous times to discuss issues raised in the film with you. We'll finish this film off tomorrow.

I lectured on the Nixon administration today. I shared with prior to class a PowerPoint lecture called "The Nixon Years". You are writing your Paper 3 tomorrow on the Civil Rights Movement. Remember, I will choose one question from each Google Doc working group and include it as a choice on this exam. I'll probably start talking about Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter tomorrow.


I gave you some class time to work on an advantages and disadvantages chart on the WTO. This chart is due tomorrow. I went through a PowerPoint lecture on the "Challenges and Opportunities of Economic Globalization", which I finished in class. I have posted the results from your Unit 2 Final Exam on HomeLogic.


I gave you the Unit 2 Research Project booklet today, and you drew lots and "drafted" topics to study. This project is due on Tuesday, May 15th, so you have lots of time (don't procrastinate). I also went through the Eight Stages of Genocide as well. Tomorrow, we'll be watching a documentary that covers many genocides of the 20th and 21st centuries called "Scream Bloody Murder". We should be able to start our case study of the Rwandan genocide this week as well.

You finished off the "Expansion of Economic Globalization" today, and had some class time to work on your Chapter 11 or 12 key terms and questions. The Chapter 11 Key Terms and Questions are due on Monday. You were also given a booklet on the WTO (and IMF and World Bank) that you should read, highlight and annotate. We'll be working with this information next week.


You should have finished "American Experience: 1964" today. You should have taken notes on this video too! Make sure that you're ready for next week's Paper 3 on the Civil Rights Movement (Tuesday, April 24th).

You looked at the development of the atomic bomb in the Manhattan Project today. You should have read about the use of the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki (p. 168-169). You watched a video from the Turning Points of History series on the atomic bomb. You should have taken notes on this video.

I'll give you the Unit 3 Worksheet tomorrow, so you can start on your Chapter 10 Key Terms. One week from tomorrow, you will be writing your Unit 2 Final Exam, the study guide will be posted here on the blog tomorrow.


We looked at the Normandy invasion today, so I showed you an excerpt from "Saving Private Ryan", hopefully you'll get a chance to finish watching this film on your own. We'll start our examination of the Holocaust tomorrow.

We continued watching the PBS series "Eyes on the Prize", we watched Episode 2 today. Your Episode 2 questions are due on Monday. If you missed class today, you can find this episode on the IB 30/35 wiki, on the Civil Rights Movement page (scroll down to find it). You can also find the entire PDF for each episode on the wiki as well (usually the readings and questions are on the first two pages of the PDF).


We finished watching "Where the Spirit Lives" today, and you also wrote a quiz on the film as well. I gave you a reading on the Canadian government's apology for the residential school system. I also showed you a CBC New in Review series on the residential schools as well. We'll be starting Unit 3 material on Monday.


We watched the documentary "Blitzkrieg to the Bomb" today, which took most of the class period. You should get the results for your Chapter 5-6 Test next week. You should also look over the maps and readings that are in your Social 20-1 coursebook (pages 172-183).
